The Hair Industry is Cycling Back to its Roots!

Weave/Wig  versus
Silver hair
Cornrows
and
a Mohawk
all rolled into one.
2018.

I used to think that my brilliant mind was enough to attract any man that I wanted.  However, a woman' hair alone can drive men wild.  Enhanced or not, biblically speaking, the hair is a woman's glory.  So why am I seeing so many Black Panther Wakanda haircuts? There are so many short afros, fades, and almost baldheaded women around every corner.  I respect the independent, bold thinking, but please make sure that your body is right and tight.

Men keep saying that they don't want to feel like they are sleeping with another man.

On a separate note, the cost of living is now where two incomes are needed. Women need hairstyles that they can maintain despite the weather changes. Most women are now working women. Protective styling can be the easiest way to look polished without the daily grind of hairstyling. So men need to support their working ladies because 2018 is a balancing act!

Day 8: Partial Mohawk using Accessories

My Sisterlocks are still wavy looking, and it is eight days post shampoo.

I used these decorative bobby pins pictured above along with small clipplies, plain scunci elastic band, and hair brooch.

Headbands from prior days seemed to slightly flatten my locs around my hairline so I wanted to use the decorative bobby pins to force a mohawk section. My clippies were placed in the front to support the curls that I still have left in the top of my head.

Seven in One Hairstyling by Benita Blocker

Two strand twisted Mohawk updo Hairstyling by Benita Blocker

This extension-free natural hairstyling gives the client several hairstyling options:
  1. French roll to the right
  2. French roll to the left
  3. Pompadour front with a bun in the back
  4. Left side braid
  5. Right side braid
  6. Mohawk twist-out
  7. Full twist-out

This hairstyle has flat twists on both sides and individual flat twists throughout the Mohawk area.  I can also style locs the same way.

To achieve this hairstyling on this particular client's natural hair, I blow dried her tresses first and then dry set using the Mizani Moisture Stretch and Mizani Perfect Curls.  She plans to forward me a few more pictures as she changes up the hairstyling.

******12/18/2014 Update  *********
My client decided to keep the updo in the back with a partial twistout in the front for her event!
Hair by Benita Blocker (final touches completed by the client herself)
Natural hair partnership!

This is a Full Twist out from the same Dry set that I completed on her in the salon.  The client allowed the steam from her shower to expand her hair. Being natural does require some self-paced creativity.

Mohawk Clipper Cutting Cited

The stylist did an excellent job customizing this mohawk to the little boy's headshape.  If he is going to sport a mohawk, then this is the best time before he starts to interview for a job.  His dad oversaw the process.

Sisterlocks: Lock Correction Completed

My Scalp is a little tender, but I am excited about my Sisterlocks correction.  Picture above is after the correction.  The picture below is before the correction.
Big difference right?  Believe it or not, after detailed experimenting with partings, I narrowed down that I only needed to detangle two Sisterlocks.

I applied the S-curl moisturizer generously through the two Sisterlocks and let it sit for a day. I then used the rattail comb for piercing and detangling.
This S-curl moisturizer is very affordable, but it does give a buildup if used daily.  For detangling purposes, it was perfect.  Some beauty supply stores do not carry this particular S-curl product.  I have only found it at Sally's Beauty Supply stores.
This the hair that was leftover from my detangling session.
I made four Sisterlocks out of the two that were there.  They are very small, but I will let my new consultant improve them at my next retightening.
I am excited that I am no longer slave to an asymmetric look.  I will be able to do updos, frohawks, and mohawks!  Another new level of freedom acheived!

DVD Review: Breaking the Mold by Freddie J

Hair artist Freddie J was featured in Chris Rock's Good Hair movie as one of the contenders for the Bronner Brothers Hair Battle title. She is an industry leader as far as the beauty industry is concerned.

I loved this dvd on how to mold/wrap the hair to achieve a "fresh" style without combing into the typical circular wrap around the head. This "new" wet wrap method delivers a "soft, corporate" mohawk effect. Very nice.

However, the downside to this video is that all three models featured have the exact same headshape. All three models have a high occipital bone and a deep inset in the nape area. Their headshapes are perfect for sporting a short cut.

However, for a client with a flatter head and less nape area, this "fresh" wrap method would not give you the same result. Actually, it would be a waste of time to attempt this mold.

So your client's headshape is a factor in how you conform a haircut as well as how many options you have to wet wrapping it.
