Active Interchanging of Locking Methods
After interviewing enough long dreadlock wearers, I have concluded that you can switch and swap between interlocking and twisting the locks without any worries. Those who have proper Sisterlocks sizing may find that their locks are too small to finger twist. So true Sisterlocks are not applicable to this article.
However, for all the micro-locks and traditional lock wearers, many people are interlocking their locks if they go swimming or if they are going to participate in water activities. Otherwise, they continue with palm rolling or finger twisting on a regular basis. No one seems to find a problem with going back and forth based on their lifestyle.
I personally also started hand (inter)locking some of my locks because some of my locks seem to unravel at the roots quicker than others. I think it has to do with the two different textures of hair that I have. So the locks that need help at the roots, I will hand lock some periodically in my spare time, but continue to finger twist all of them during my designated tightening sessions. We will see what difference that will make over the next five months. I believe that I am more curious if it will cause an inconsistent look in the lock. I doubt it based on all the feedback, but who knows . . .

My 15 months Microlocks Check-in
I hope you all love my curls! I had to perm rod it wet and then pin curl/bundle overnight without the rods. I used the Jamaican Mango and Lime Lock and Set Styling Lotion for hold. I sat under the dryer for an hour and a half and my ends were not dry from the perm rods. So I am now convinced that my hair is too long to perm rod set on small rods and actually expect them to dry in any reasonable amount of time.
I used the "Lily of the Desert" 99% aloe vera Gelly for my 3.5 retightening session this go around. It is thicker than the Trader Joes' 99% pure Aloe vera Gel. So far, I think I like it better because of the thicker consistency. Both are moisturizing.
I have learned a few more lock lessons this month.
1) MicroLocks will double up on their own if they start to thin, so a loctician should NOT need to double my locks up intentionally.
2) Freshly twisted locks can be bundled up before swimming or any other wet recreational activities.
It is true that if the locks are interlocked then the bundling may not be necessary for mature locks, but I am still really content with not interlocking.
I also love my hair clips to give more volume in my top!

Neoprene Swim Cap
These Neoprene Swim caps are basically a "synthetic rubber" head covering that seals out water. They come in different sizes to accommodate all the modern day big hair.
The Neoprene material alone according to online research is used to make everything from a laptop sleeve to a dive suit.
According to the testamonies on the flyers, this swimming cap seems to protect the hair from wetness very well. I do not know how to swim yet, and I look forward to wearing my locks without a swim cap when I do go swimming.
However, for those who do not want to deal with hair maintenance immediately after a swim, I believe that this swimming cap will do the trick.
My only concern is that because it is a synthetic rubber, it acts like a supersized rubber band. I did not try the cap on at the Bronner Brothers hair show but it looked snug yet comfortable. Rubber historically has been taboo for breakage when it comes to hair so just be careful trying to keep your hair dry.
The cost was about $20 at the hair show to purchase. They look like the picture in the flyer with the neoprene material inside of it. The brand is "myswimcap."

SisterLocks, Nappy Locs, Inter Locs, Latch Locs!
I also researched and researched about all of these locking patterns and methods. I found a nappyloc tool that was shaped differently from the SisterLock tool. I watched an Interlocking youtube video that transformed a straight hair mannequin into a loc by rotating a tool. So locking relaxed hair is definitely not a problem.
If you want to go swimming after a loc tightening, then SisterLocks and any other interlocking method will allow you to do so. Palm rolling does not allow that freedom.
I know that I am all over the place with this article. I hope that this can tell you how excited I am about my sample locks. They are soooooo beautiful. I love them! I see the light at the end of the tunnel. I see freedom of hair and naturally long lengths.
This light also came with a reality check . . . The initial cost is $750.00 (seven hundred and fifty US dollars) Good Lord Almighty! The consultant said that my hair had a lot of length on it, and that I had a big head. Well, I took her comment as saying that I have long hair and that I am highly intelligent! (smile)
She also said that it takes the average person a year for their locks to mature. Based on my "naps" - she said it will probably only take about six months for me. Did not I tell you that I had some extremely kinky hair? Well, it's official! All of my extremely nappy hair is finally going to work in my favor! Halleujah!!!! Praise God! "Doing the happy dance!"
By going to a certified SisterLocks consultant, I had to watch two SisterLock videos. I was very pleased to learn about the origin of SisterLocks. The founder was not a cosmetologist but a "College professor." Oh my God, her conclusions were exactly as my conclusion. Our Black people can not get ahead because our hair holds us back! Okay, if you were born with "wash and go" hair - this article is not about you. "Wash and go" Sistahs have an easier road to securing jobs, husbands, and other freebie out of life. All I can say is "God blessed you." Do not take your hair for granted.
I was also very happy to complete my consultation because keeping my hair detangled was literally become a beast with all of my new growth plus relaxer on the ends.
God bless this woman!!!! She told me that I do not have to try to keep my hair detangled anymore. She wants a "head full of naps" when she puts my Sisterlocks in. What?????? A head full of naps is good?! Oh yeah! I was on Cloud 9 - a head full of naps is what she wants -- then a head full of naps is what she will get! I can handle that with my eyes closed! (Smile)
SisterLocks really won me over! It will cost me $100 every four weeks and about 3 hours a month in time, but as beautiful as these sample locks look . . . it will be worth every last penny. I love them. It is only a few compared to the other 400 locs that need to go in, but I will able to work out and swim and still look beautiful.
The Sisterlocks consultant's hair was so beautiful - my God - within another five years or less, Kim Kardashian will need to watch out. Another long layered, thick, voluminous head of black tresses will be on the scene! Hello!
The bigger question is will I continue offering relaxer services to my kinky haired clients? Remember - the kinky hair clients are the ones that get the most scalp exposure to the relaxer application because their/our hair stays compacted at the root. It does not grow away, but curls back on itself. Please see my other article for more information.
Okay, enough said. Some of my clients are considering SisterLocks, but they are waiting on me . . . Well, I am already set to go! I have a date for my full installation. I will do a big article on my new journey within a few months. It will be worth the wait! I promise! In the meantime, I will continue to write about other hair topics dear to my heart and yours! Peace and Locs!

Hair tips for Swimmers!
This article was at a special request. It made a lot of sense to me because the hot weather usually equals pool and beach parties!!!
First of all, Pre-treat the hair! Please see my separate article on "pre-shampoo" treatments as well as my article on "organic coconut oil." These products should strengthen hair and not wash away in the water.
After the swim, if your hair does NOT tangle, then clarify the hair by using Pureology Purify shampoo.
You can read the Pureology Purify shampoo benefits here.
If your hair does tangle easily or become unmanageable, then do not use the clarifying shampoo. Instead use Uans crema conditioner as a shampoo. Pictured is the new packaging.
Pictured here is the old Uans Crema moisturizing condiitoner.
Pictured is the benefits of this conditioner. It is still important to pre-treat the hair before getting into the water, and then choosing the right after care regimen based on your hair's manageability.
