Natural Hair Revitalization: KeraCare Overnight Moisturizing Treatment
I had quite a few loose natural hair clients that swore by this product regardless of their hair texture. Since my Sisterlocks are getting so long, I don't think my super coily hair is staying hydrated on the ends. In addition, I have used some clarifying shampoos that may have dehydrated the ends without me adequately restoring the moisture back in.
In one of my previous articles, I extended my front locs with my own hair. However, I really don't want my hair dry and brittle anyway which is what causes breakage.
So, at night, I started using a quarter size amount emulsified into my hands and massaged through my whole head of locs focusing on the ends. Amazing hydration in the morning without added weight.
Whether locked natural or loose natural, the KeraCare Overnight Moisturizing Treatment is still a winner!

The Healthy Approach to Long, Relaxed Hair
Hair by Benita Blocker
My client is 3 weeks post relaxer. She gets the Paul Mitchell relaxer every 3 months. We used the MoisturRight Hair Repair Masque cocktailed with KeraCare Humecto conditioner under medium heat for 18 minutes. A Processing cap and a regular platform dryer was all that was needed. No steamer.
We used red, hard mesh rollers and Jane Carter Solution Wrap and Roll foam. One hour drying time was enough to deliver the results pictured above.
My client loves to just let her curls fall naturally.

Winning Conditioning Combinations!!!
For my Roller Set clients:
The Affirm MoisturRight Hair Repair Masque layered with the KeraCare Humecto Creme Conditioner seems to heal the hair and hold wet set curls in spite of the humid weather. I use medium heat for 15 to 30 minutes to allow the cocktail to work effectively.
I may have to discontinue this combination once the fall season hits, but my roller set clients' feedback so far this summer has included incredible shine, softness, and hold.
For my blow/dry style clients:
KeraCare Humecto Creme Conditioner layered with Shea Moisture Professional Keravega Monoi Oil Complex Smooth Finish Conditioner delivers incredible shine and movement to the hair. The heat protection is built into this Smooth Finish Condiitoner. I still use additional leave-in conditioners, but I have no worries about the thermal marcel service. 15 minutes under medium heat seems to be adequate enough time for the Shea Moisture Professional fragrance to lock into the hair along with moisture.
The final styling results are sweet smelling hair and reflective shine.
Retail sizes are shown here. I have backbar sizes for salon use.

Avlon's Texture Release System: Original Formula
Hair by Benita Blocker, October 2014
I used the original formula of the KeraCare Texture Release Smoothing System with this client. Having been trained on the Brazilian Blowout smoothing treatment, I found the application phase of the Texture Release system to be slower and more difficult than the Brazilian Blowout formula. However, I also experienced a nose bleed assuming it came from excessive exposure to an original formula of the Brazilian Blowout solution.
I did get fumes from the Texture Release System, but apparently, because this old formula is a concentrated petroleum base product, it caused a haze in the salon.
Side view before smoothing treatment.
My client's mom explained that my client's hair is a mixture of Mexican and Black. So thickness and curliness are both full throttle. Luckily, my client says she likes "big hair" but she needed more control.
Hair by Benita Blocker, October 2014
Application time was an hour to get the Texture Release from root to end throughout the head. Flat ironing was another hour or more. Typically, Brazilian Blowout would require a final water rinse and masque and another blowdry style phase. KeraCare Texture Release does NOT require another water rinse, but there is a gamble that the client could be sensitive to the Texture Release System. Avlon Industries' test salon actually recommends a "patch test" on the day before for anyone that has sensitive skin. I told them that I did not realize that the system rose to a patch test level.
I hope to get my hands on the new Texture Release kit soon. Apparently, the Thermal Protection spray will be less concentrated, and the smoothing solution is going to be in a spray bottle. I actually like the origninal formula of the Thermal Protection Spray so I am going to be dissappointed that another good thing will be gone.
Back view before smoothing treatment.
My client was pleased with the service. I felt that it was a little oily than what I would prefer, but the extra oil will disappear with her next wash. We just considered it as a hot oil treatment.
Also, a note to the hairstylists, the chemical smell of the Texture Release system lingered on my clothes and hands. My cover-ups have to be laundered after performing this Texture Release service. I hope the smell from the new Texture Release formula is better. This original formula does not smell worse than a "curly perm," but it is a strong second as far as I am concerned.
When I get to try the new formula of the Texture Release system, then I plan to add a separate article on this blog about it. Until then, stay tuned. Thanks for following me!

New KeraCare Humecto tub packaging is less durable
You may want to hold on to your old tub of KeraCare Humecto conditioner. The tub pictured on the left is the old packaging . It has longer vertical lines running along the opening area versus the shorter vertical lines pictured on the right. The opening is not a big deal, but look at the picture below.
The old packaging has a rounded bottom on the left and the new packaging has sharp corners that can cause some discomfort when handling a full tub of conditioner. Also, even though, you can not see from the pictures that I took, the new packaging is LESS DURABLE. I could see the shadow of the conditioner inside as I moved it around. The bottom of the tub also felt like it could barely support the five pounds of product inside.
In a nutshell, if you accidently drop the new packaging of this KeraCare Humecto tub, you probably will have no product to savage because the new packaging does not seem to be built for accidental dropping.
No one plans to drop products or tools, but it can happen. When holding this new packaging of the KeraCare Humecto, I literally can feel the conditioner in the palm of my hands. The walls of the tub are even thinner in density than the old packaging. I will probably pour the new tub of conditioner into the old tub packaging. I really do not trust myself to move the new packaging around too much without hurting my hands or dropping it. Needless to say that I am disappointed in the cheaper quality container that Avlon went to.

KeraCare Sulfate-Free Hydrating Detangling Shampoo
The Sulfate-free version of the KeraCare Hydrating Detangling Shampoo came out years ago, but many stylists preferred the "Classic" version for wet set services. The ingredients in the sulfate-free version of the hydrating detangling shampoo are healthier than the "classic" version. Also, the pH value of 6.0 helps to elevate the cuticle and loosen up dirt.
I started using this shampoo as my first lather with almost every client over the last few weeks, and I really am seeing incredible shine and less frizz even when they come in for their next appointment. It may be the wheat protein that is in the product is strengthening the hair without extra heat.
I am not sure why this shampoo seems to make a difference in my non-chemical hair services, but I definitely found a new favorite. Natural or relaxed hair should feel at ease with at least one lather from this shampoo.

Expired KeraCare Hydrating Detangling Shampoo
I believe that I bought this gallon size Classic Keracare Hydrating Detangling shampoo within the last two years, but it has expired on me. It is runny and looks like egg yolks. It does NOT smell bad which is awkward because people could be using expired product and not know it unless they look inside the container.
The classic formula is the original formula of the KeraCare Hydrating Detangling shampoo. They have a sulfate-free version as well.
I tried to take a picture of the inside of the gallon size shampoo, but I could not get the lighting right so I cut the jug open so that you can clearly see what this particular shampoo looks like when it is expired. The runny consistency is also a sign of expired product. Fresh shampoo should be smooth and has a uniform consistency.
I had to toss this shampoo. I will not buy a gallon size again. I still use a lot of Paul Mitchell and Pureology in my salon. Apparently, I am not using enough of the KeraCare line to finish the product before it expires. I could not find a legible batch code on the jug either.
So look for expiration dates and be aware of the consistency of the product for freshness.

Review: KeraCare Overnight Moisturizing Treatment
First of all, let me tell you that my natural hair DIY "at home" clients are now buying two jars at a time of this KeraCare Overnight Moisturizing Treatment cream.
One of my clients even asked me how did that this product escape her product arsenal. I told her that it is NOT under the KeraCare "Natural Textures" line. It was introduced for relaxed hair. She then responded "no wonder" she missed it.
Well, since I am selling this product at $15 a jar and two at a time, I started to re-examine why this product is working so well with natural hair? Then I realized that the pH is 3.2. It is acidic and is helping to seal down the cuticle.
Wow! Apparently, if you roll or Bantu knot your natural hair overnight using this Keracare treatment cream, you will wake up to a new head of hair! (If your curl pattern is a Type 3 or Type 4a, then you get the picture of the process that I am trying to describe.)
Now, for my relaxed hair clients, they like this KeraCare cream better than the Mizani RoseH2O cream. Why? It does not have that lingering fragrance associated with the Mizani RoseH2O product. The consistency of the two creams are about the same, but hands down, if you loved the Mizani RoseH2O cream, then you are going to be thrilled with the KeraCare overnight Moisture Treatment.
A little product goes a long way!

Lightweight Hair and Scalp Moisturizing Options
With cold weather on its way, those who are prone to drier skin and scalp may need some extra moisturizing.
KeraCare has a high sheen glossifier and a Dry and Itchy Scalp Glossifier. The latter has salicylic acid as well as sulfur in it which may be perfect for natural hair clients.
Reminder for Relaxer clients: Be cautious of using products with sulfur in them near relaxer time.
I typically steer my relaxer clients away from any products with sulfur in them to avoid any timing limitations as to when a relaxer is safe to apply.
Design Essentials has Herbal Complex 4 Hair and Scalp Treatment which is also a lightweight pomade compared to Vaseline.

Product Spoilage within two years
Paraben free means no preservatives, but it also means that the shelf life is limited. I am having to trash "half full" products because of product spoilage.
This Bee Mine product was made in December 2011 based on the product code, but it started to smell rancid already. I think one ingredient is probably spoiling the whole jar. I really think that this jar is only one year old. That's money down the drain.
This KeraCare Natural Textures Hair Milk seems to spoil quickly as well. The 2010 bottle is already separated and the smaller 2011 bottle that I just opened smelled spoiled from day one. I know what it should smell like . . .
Again, with the 2011 bottle, it is probably one ingredient that is spoiling the whole bottle. Just be careful when purchasing "paraben free." You need to get your hands on it as close to the manufacture date and use it within a year!

Protein shampoos: Reconstructive Overkill?
Believe it or not, some shampoos can serve as protein reconstructors in place of conditioning treatments. This AG shampoo has a pH of 4.5 to 5.5 which is a normal pH for hair and skin. The hair seems to be able to absorb protein no matter if it is supplied through the shampoo or the conditioner. It seems odd but even after rinsing shampoo or conditioner out of the hair; the hair absorbs what it is craving.
Careful, if your hair is compromised due to heat damage or mechanical damage it may absorb too much protein too quickly and you may need to soften it with a conditioner that has no protein. Some moisturizing conditioners still have low levels of protein. Bee Mine Products has a conditioner specifically designed without protein.
As far as other protein enriched shampoos, be careful of "Cleansing Creams" for curly, natural hair. KeraCare Cleansing Cream can be protein overkill for relaxed hair. Although, it is a sulfate-free product, it still is better for chemical free hair. Even KeraCare Hydrating Detangling Shampoo - Classic has some protein in it but less than the Cleansing Cream. Relaxed hair seems to remain strong and detangled with the use of the KeraCare Hydrating Detangling Shampoo. Typically, clients who keep their hair 70% to 85% relaxed will find that the KeraCare Hydrating Detangling Shampoo is sufficient for their overall hair needs.
So if you are short on time but need a reconstructor, consider adding a protein enriched shampoo to your shampooing step followed by a pure moisture conditioner. Please see the article on the Ultra Sheen Protein shampoo that was advertised in the 1970's on this blog as well.

Paul Mitchell Relaxer Client: Almost two years!
Hair by Benita Blocker. My client started with me in October 2010. Her curl pattern is probably a Type 3c. I put her on the Paul Mitchell regular strength relaxer system.
Hair by Benita Blocker. She gets relaxer touch-ups about every 10 to 12 weeks. We just completed another relaxer touch-up and a traditional stove and marcel curling iron service. We trimmed the hair for some shape and used some Kayvel curl wave to assist with holding the curls.
My client uses the KeraCare Hydrating Detangling Shampoo Classic for home care because of the amount of texture that she keeps in her hair. She wears her hair in a bun on top of her head on bad hair days. She loves the Paul Mitchell Relaxer system. It works for her.

The Press and Curl Regimen to beat the HEAT!
The Summer Heat is on, and the only "Afro Circus" that you want to see is probably in the latest Madagascar III movie! (Loved it!!! in 3D! :)
On a more serious note . . . Are you all natural and want a press and curl service that will beat the heat?
I have been tweaking this regimen for years! This one is the best one yet!!!!!
Tools needed: Kizure Pressing Comb, pressing pad (optional), paddle brush, Marcel curling iron and stove.
Products needed: KeraCare 1st Lather sulfate-free shampoo, Bee Mine Botanical Moisturizing Shampoo, Mizani Moistufuse conditioner, Chi Silkeratin17 treatment, Joico Detangling Leave-in, Pureology SuperSmooth Elixir, Kayvel Creme Press, and Kayvel Curling Wave.
Technique: 1) Shampoo with KeraCare 1st Lather Sulfate-free shampoo once or twice if hair is extremely oily from a hot oil treatment, etc. 2) Shampoo with Bee Mine Botanical Moisturizing Shampoo two or three times until hair feels soft. 3) Towel blot the hair and generously apply the Mizani Moistufuse conditioner through out the hair. Comb the Moistufuse conditioner through the hair. Spray the Chi Silkeratin17 fortifying treatment through the hair layering the treatment on top of the Moistufuse conditioner. Comb through and apply the Silkeratin17 everywhere that the comb is catching in the hair. As soon as you are completely detangled from the Chi and Mizani cocktail, then sit under the platform dryer for about 15 minutes. Not much longer because most of your work is already done . . . you detangled before going under the dryer remember? 4) Rinse the treatment out and apply your two leave-in conditioners for your blow-dry service. (Joico Leave-in detangler and Pureology Supersmooth Elixir) Comb through to distribute evenly. 5) Blowdry completely, start warming up the pressing comb, and then apply your Kayvel creme press. Distribute a nickel size amount emulsified in your hands trhoughout the hair, and that is all that you need. Comb the creme press to finish even distribution through the hair. 6) Test the pressing comb to make sure it is not too hot. Grab your pressing pad if you have one. Soft press the hair all over with pressing comb and pressing pad if your comb is starting to cool down on lengthy hair. The hair should be manageable by combing through without being bone straight. Warm up your marcel irons. 7) Comb the hair into a ponytail. If there are any extremely uneven ends, clip some of the hair ends off. Apply your a nickel size of Kayvel Curl wave emulsified in your hands throughout the hair. Comb through for even distribution 8)Test your marcel iron. Begin curling your hair and clipping the curls down until they cool down.
Then voila - your core press and curl is complete! If you need smoother edges, then decide if you need a temple pressing comb (small pressing comb) or just some smooth edge styling aids.
Results: Soft, straight hair without the grease! Very humidity resistant too!
Let me know how you like this technique and product selection!!!!

Keratin Treatment Alternative to try first!
1) KeraCare 1st Lather Shampoo or any clarifying shampoo. 2) Pureology Nanoworks shampoo (luxury line - $55 for this one bottle, but worth it!) 3) Pureology Supersmooth condition (skip this conditioning step- if you have fine hair. The luxury shampoo has conditioner in it.) 4) Spray a generous amount of the Joico Leave-in detangler and distribute a small amount of the Pureology elixir for slip. Blow-dry. You should achieve a nice straightness. Then use Pureology Shinemax sparingly throughout and touch up any areas with a curling iron. Follow with Aquage Beyond Shine spray to tame any flyways! By the third try at this, your hair should be improving in health without all the flat ironing . . .

Best Detangling Shampoo for Overprocessed Hair
Every so often I get a client to come in where my high-end Pureology shampoos just does nothing for the hair. This is when I pull the Keracare Hydrating Detangling Shampoo - Classic out. It is my last resort, and it always saves the day!
Most of the time, the client would have tried everything at home to get the hair under control, but it just becomes a tangled mess when wet. So they then make a call to a professional.
The typical history of the hair that falls into this category is hair that has been colored or highlighted one too many times or bi-racial hair that is too fine to be relaxed, yet, it has a natural frizziness to it.
The KeraCare Hydrating Detangling shampoo - Classic does contain sulfates, but it has been the "go to" shampoo for probably a decade when all else fails. I started studying the ingredients because I was amazed that this shampoo could deliver the control over the hair that seems to be unmatched. I discovered that this shampoo has a hydrolzed wheat protein. I had an "aw haw" moment. This shampoo is a protein based shampoo. It coats and fills the desensitized hair shaft causing it to detangle. Amazing.
I have another protein based shampoo by AG that I may use on the next customer that comes in with past due, challenged hair to see if it is the protein that indeed makes a difference, but I am going to keep my KeraCare Hydrating Detangling Shampoo - classic available in case all else fails!
NOTE: The KeraCare Hydrating Detangling Shampoo does come in a sulfate-free formula in which Avlon discontinued their original formula. However, many professionals enjoyed the results of the original formula so Avlon brought the original formula back as the "classic" line.

KeraCare Intensive Restorative Masque Growing Mold
I have to admit that I do not use this masque on a regular basis. Also, if the pump gets clogged then I take off the top and scoop what I need out of it.
However, I was surprised to see furry mold growning inside the jar the last time I opened it up. I have no idea which ingredient is the source of the mold, but I am definitely tossing this product in the trash. As you can see the product/masque is not expired according to the three year rule.

As I Am products linked to makers of KeraCare
A fellow British blogger (My Long Hair Journey) highlighted "As I am" natural haircare products last week. I was in shock that Avlon Industries was the owner of this product line. Avlon makes brands such as KeraCare and Affirm relaxers.
According to the As I Am website, Chemist/Dr. Syed recognized that so many women were doing their natural hair at home that it was a good business move to launch a product line that can be sold directly to the public in the various beauty supply stores.
I found the AsIAm products in our local Sally's Beauty Supply store. Cost range is $16.99 to $24.99 in Sally's Beauty Supply. We will see if people buy at this price point at a Sally's Beauty Supply.
What's interesting is that the KeraCare Natural Textures line that is sold in the hair salons is around the same price. If Avlon is cutting the hairstylists out of the market, then why is the new line of products still relatively expensive?
AsIAm products are now being sold internationally. There are some product reviews on the Internet.
I must admit that I was a little disappointed. It seems that Avlon is trying to get in; where they fit in. They want to increase revenues by cutting out the salon level. I suppose that it is a smart business move. The makers of the AsIAm products show "Salon Commodities, Ltd, North Lake, IL" on the jar instead of Avlon Products.
Avlon is not the first beauty company that wanted to bypass the salon professional. Nexxus and other lines have gone mainstream as well.

Michigan Hair Stylist: Rob Willis International

I first met Rob Willis about five years ago at a hair show in Orlando, FL. I bought his "Refresh your color skills" dvd and a flat iron holder for the belt. As my followers know, I no longer endorse the flat irons. I have seen too much damaged hair everywhere I go.
But enough about flat irons! The DVD was an excellent buy! Rob Willis is indeed a visionary. He is a "thinking" hair stylist. He is definitely an educator and a colorist.
The funny thing about DVD's is that sometimes you buy them, and you are not ready to receive all the valuable information disclosed in it. However, years or more later, reviewing old DVD's again can be a breath of "fresh air" without travelling great distances to a class.
So four years later, I am reviewing Rob Willis' color Refresh DVD when he gave the coffee pot example about hair being transparent. I had always heard this but never truly grasped the visual.
So Rob describes in this dvd a clear coffee pot full of coffee. So you would see "brown" coffee but if you decide to pour out the brown coffee and put pink kool-aid in the coffeepot. You will probably then see pink kool-aid. Now if you want to change the color of the clear coffeepot again, then you would need to remove the koolaid in order to put another "flavor" or color into the coffee pot.
So everytime you need to change the color, then bleach/lightener or artificial pigment remover is needed in order to "empty" the pot in preparation to fill the pot with another color. This analogy to hair was right on time for me!
In addition to the coffeepot example, Rob Willis kept it real about the state of our beauty industry. He really stayed leading edge!
The other important topic on his DVD was about the "color bath." The color bath was essentially sealing the hair with semi-permanent color or "cellophane" color. I have actual done more color baths layered on top of conditioners lately, and I obtained wonderful results. This was one of my reasons for reviewing this DVD again.
The "color bath" idea had been embedded in my memory from the first time that I reviewed the dvd years ago. It did not seem healthy then because I was thinking that the color baths sealed out moisture. Our hair needs moisture. However, if you layer the color on top of a moisturizing condiitoner such as KeraCare Humecto, then the result are phenomenal with moisture sealed in.
The "color baths" can take your finished look to the next six figure income level.
Give me some time . . . I will be asking my clients for pictures again over the next few weeks.
In the meantime, the pictures of the flat iron holder distributed by Rob Willis International a few years ago. It is designed to be worn on your belt.

2012: Change your Vision not your Hair!
What I have found that if you look past the style, the makeup, and the pose, but really look at the root of the hair to guess at curl patterns. I started seeing a trend. Almost all of the free flowing, sleek hairstyles looked like the model had a relaxed, type 3 curl pattern.
On the other hand, almost all of the "defined" shorter hairstyles looked like they had a relaxed, type 4 curl pattern. So what does that mean? Questions about curl pattern types? Please see my separate article about Andre Walker's book on hair.
Within this article, I added three pictures of what I think looks like Type 3 curl patterns and three pictures of what I think looks like Type 4 curl patterns. Can you see a difference? Most Type 4 curl patterns can not get color highlights, relaxer touch-ups and maintain length. Most Type 4 curl patterns still have a light "ripple" of texture through the relaxed strand of hair no matter what relaxer is used. Those with Type 3 curl patterns usually can get a very sleek, finished hairstyle with very little effort. So go ahead and compare pictures in this article. I will give you a hint. The ladies in the "BBD Stretch" flyer/flier would more than likely fall into a Type 3 curl pattern.
Okay. So we are born with the curl pattern that God gave us. We can elongate our curl pattern, but we can not change the starting pattern. Curl reduction (i.e. elongation) can alter it for styling control, but our foundation is "what it is."
So if you are a type 4 curl pattern, but you want a type 3 curl pattern "finish." You may not get the sleekness, but you can get the haircut and the final styling with some good movement to it.
I am on a quest to feature type 4 curl patterns within one hair (styling) book. I think that the type 3 curl patterns are featured everywhere and are often used in hair show demonstration because of the brilliant, "sealed" cuticle finish.
I just wrote an article mentioning "not that nappy" hair. In that article, I mention how the makers of KeraCare products does not reflect the "sistas" with "kink" in their hair in their more recent print ads.
It makes you wonder if these "black" marketed companies really have the best interest of the "kinky" hair in mind. Luckily, with the huge "naturally curly" movement, all the product companies are being forced with really seeing the levels of curly and kinky-curly hair that is really out there.
So hairstylists that are interested in showcasing their work on type 4 curl patterns -relaxed or natural then let me know! Please also be willing to assist with the cost of the distinguished publication.
On a separate note, I am also on a quest to feature other hairstylists internationally on this blog that are doing exceptional work! I am NOT looking for any submissions. I refuse to have hairstylists to pay to be featured on this blog. I only want to feature hairstylists that I have had to stop their client and ask "who does your hair?" I will find YOU through your work!
After months of waiting to find an exceptional head of hair outside of my own clientele (smile), I met a lady today. I gave her the invitation to give to her hairstylist. She was from Hampton, Virginia area. Historically, almost every person that I have ever met with undoubtedly exceptional hair have never been from the NC area. California, Virginia, Washington DC, New York, but not from the South. Hopefully, the hairstylist will call, and I can interview her. My fingers are crossed. The lady with exceptional hair actually was a perfect "silver fox." If I had to guess the curl pattern . . . probably a type 3 curl pattern, but it was just simply beautiful.
Okay, ladies, for 2012: embrace your texture, accept your curl pattern, and visualize growing your hair based what works for your hair type; not anyone else. Sisters can have the same mother but different hair types. Learn you. Do you. Have a Happy New year!!!!!!

KeraCare products keep changing ingredients!
KeraCare product line changed the formula of some of its shampoos a few years ago to make them sulfate-free. Many of the hairstylists began complaining about the new formula, so KeraCare re-entered the old formula back onto the market as the "classic" formula. Now, I realized that the original "sulfate-free" 1st Lather shampoo has changed ingredients since it was first introduced into the market. The pH is also different. Some bottles of the sulfate-free First Lather shampoos have a "6.5" pH and some bottles have a "4.5" pH.
I wonder what are the rules of changing the ingredients of products, but they still market the products as the same product?
For instance, I did an article on how Nexxus Humectress changed their ingredients over the years. Recently, I also noticed that Paul Mitchell Sculpting Foam eliminated an ingredient Lawsonia Inermis(Henna) Extract as well as changed their dispenser top for this foam.
I suppose the manufacturers do not want to pay extra money to re-package or to bring alert to minor ingredient changes, but major ingredient changes should be marked on the packaging as a courtesy to the hairstylists in case the ingredient change affect the results in their client's hair. At least, they will not have to be surprised.
Physicians don't expect their prescription drugs to change in midstream. Why should cosmetologists have the "switch-a-roo" done to them?
