Unleashing Avlon's Texture Release!

If you are ready to come out of the relaxer or the thio based body wave (Wave Nouveau, etc), then Avlon's Texture Release system may be perfect for you!

In my opinion, it is a "cousin" to the "Diva Smooth" process (separate blog article) and healthier than those keratin smoothing treatments.

It is a temporary curl elongation.  It is a hair filler that is heat activated and offers you wash n`go styling or just frizz-free straightness for up to about 10 weeks depending on the hair type.  My salon (Applebaum Salon) now offers this service.  The pictures in this article are from my training class.

Avlon's Texture Release system is a Nano Technology. There is NO formaldehyde NOR any type of aldehyde deriative.  There are no fumes as you flat iron.  It has NOT been tested on children.  So this system like any other hair chemical is for those past puberty.

The two models have been shampooed and dried.  Their hair texture is VERY SOFT.  Their curl pattern is a Type 4, but they do NOT have resistant hair.

Color correction or any color services should be done a week after this Texture Release service to avoid fading your color or removing the color.  The lotion should not be applied to the scalp but if the scalp comes in contact with the product then it is not life threatening.

The blow dry service is what starts the activation of this system.  The client has to be blown dry first then they can be re-wet for a wash and go styling or "hot ironed" for straighter results.

When re-wetting the blown dry hair, allow the curl memory to come back.  It may take a little longer to curl up, but it will start to wave in about five or 10 minutes.

There is a Curl, Shape and Shine Cream for "wash and go" styling which was used section by section to crunch this model for final styling.

The other longer haired model at the beginning of this article was flat ironed at 400 degrees with 2 to 3 passes of the flat iron.

I am really excited about this product. It is double the price of the relaxer service, but it qualifies as a healthier version of the smoothing treatments on the market.

I will try to post more feedback from my own clients as I get more people on the system.

  1. Clarification: The Texture Release System is a totally different procedure than Design Essentials Strengthening Therapy System. There is not two flat ironing sessions with this procedure.

    1. Ms Benita can you please call me at 314-276-4279? I just got the treatment put in my hair and my curls are completely gone! My stylist told me that this was a keratin and that I would retain my texture but my hair completely straight when wet! I'm so sad that I might have to do a big chop again. Will my curls ever come back??

    2. I will text message you soon. Consider roller set services until your curl pattern returns.

  2. I used the marcel iron and conventional stove with my Texture Release client, and it worked perfectly. I personally do NOT recommend using a flat iron with this process, but the Texture Release instructions assume that a flat iron will be used. It's the hairstylist's choice.

  3. If the client has more frizz than actual curl and texture, then the Uberliss Smoothing Treatment is recommended by Dr. Ali Syed for wavy hair textures. Please see my most recent blog article on Uberliss.

  4. Please see my separate blog article entitled "Breaking news" in regards to future changes with the Texture Release product.

Also, the feedback from my clients thus far is that the hair is more manageable, but it does not replace the relaxer as far as frizzing or swelling in humid conditions. It is an enhancement to the already relaxed hair to prevent frizzing in humid conditions.

    1. Hello, fellow hairstylist here. So this product can be used on relaxed or previously texturised hair?

    2. Yes, fellow hairstylist Shawn Charmaine, it is an enhancement to previously relaxed hair. I would focus on new growth area only for heat passes. I hope this helps!

  5. Hi, I'm not a hairstylist - just an average person who does her own hair. My hair is long (past mid-back) and very healthy. I have been using Willie Morrow's relaxer for several years now. I don't like the straight look a relaxer give me. I like my 3c curl patter, but my hair is hard to manage and damages easily without some the relaxer. Do you think this will help?

    1. Dear LittleTexasRex: I have seen so many curl patterns that even at a 3c curl pattern, is your cuticle smooth or rough? The good thing about this Texture Release is it is temporary. Only too much heat from the ironing would do damage. This solution is gentle to the hair but it requires heat to activate it. So no worries about the product, but the stylist needs to make a good judgement call on the number of passes with the flat iron. Texture Release will make your hair more manageable even if you only use the blow dryer to heat activate it. It's worth trying if you can fit into your budget. Have low expectations and you may be pleasantly surprised!

  6. I completed another Texture Release on a client yesterday who was over 12 weeks post relaxer. She was type 4b curl pattern, fine to medium, smooth cuticle new growth. She blowdried straight and I did flat iron with titanium plates throughout to save time. I still feel the flat iron gives a limp look. So I went back and marcel curled with a #50 iron all over and the hair looked so much more shiny and alive. Because her hair was fine, the Texture Release gave a little heaviness to it so it did not have movement, but it did have volume. She was willing to work with it in order to continue a possible transition out of relaxing. We should be able to roller set on her next visit and her roots should pull straight with the roller tension.

  7. Hi Benita - I noticed in a previous post that one should wait a week to apply a color. Can a semi-color/rinse be applied at some point during the process?

    1. I asked the same question initially and Avlon's response was that the "semi color/rinse" would dilute the solution interfering with the effectiveness of the smoothing. I have not tested out this information, but it makes sense to me! Great minds think alike! Great question.

  8. I also advise hairstylists to use gloves during the Texture Release application. The product does NOT burn the hands nor tingle, but the nanotechnology of the product seems to linger within the skin. I felt like I had a micro-thin layer of film on my hand that took a couple of days to eliminate and my inside palm of my hand seemed to have minor dermatitis or skin peeling. The inside palm had the most exposure to the product as I worked the solution through the hair which would explain why my whole hand was not peeling. This issue does not give me any major concern considering I have sensitive skin anyway. I will update my comments by next week if my hand does not normalize by then. I am sure it will.

  9. The improved formula of the Texture Release kit is on the market now. Please ask your distributor to switch out your old kits for the new ones. The inconsistency of the old kit got worse and worse to even generate fumes during the ironing phase. I should be getting the new kit by next week. If I do not have a better experience with the new kit, then I will be very disappointed.

  11. Hi Benita I am a licensed stylist in Miami, I was wondering what is your price for this service? I'm thinking about adding this to my services.

    1. Dear Lockie: I charged the price of a relaxer to get practice with it. I did not like the new formula any better in the spray form. While the class was impressive, the product has been unstable. I have another brand that just arrived. I am going to give it a try. Target pricing: $160 or more. Best wishes.

    1. I just got the Basic Hair Care One Step Treatment in, but I have not tried it yet. Another client had it done before coming to me and I liked the results.

    2. Shawn Charmaine: I tried the Basic Hair Smoothing Treatment, and I like it much better than Avlon Texture Release. Easier application, less smell, and great results on naturals. I would be caution on relaxed hair/ends. It is the closest thing to Brazilian Blowout without the health scare. I did not feel like I needed a mask with this one step formula. Also, less weight on the hair, no grease nor smoke if some overstauration occurs. I am sold.

  13. I've had great results since the new formula in spray bottle actually.....only thing is, you'd need a mask from breathing in all the ingredients.

    1. My last client was pleased with the looseness of her texture from the Avlon Texture Release service. I agree maybe a mask and an apron would make the service more tolerable. Brazilian Blowout was the easiest smoothing treatment.

  14. Hello I have tried the ATR System and my one client has like a more Caucasian type curly hair, we did the first application and she loved it, but after three days she called me and said that it shrunk back to the way it used to be before the app. She usually gets a blow out straightening service but in the summer she likes to rock that natural hair but pulled back because she hates the shrinkage of the natural curls she has. She prefers that elongated curly style. We did another app the following week she called after four days and was more pleased. she said it worked better with a leave in conditioner and gel. My question is, will the curl pattern eventually become more straighter or elongated after multiple applications? And does the product go on all the hair each application or new growth only?

    1. I have found that the more flat iron passes helps to infuse the product - you control the areas that you flat iron. You are welcome to call the Avlon company. I discontinued use of this system.

    2. I am considering the product. Please let me know why you chose to discontinue use of the system

    4. jm: Also, I did write few other blog articles about this system on this blog. The system overall was NOT stable enough for me. It was a bit pre-mature before going to market in my opinion. I am not even sure if they are still actively selling the system in my local area.

  15. I took an update class on this Texture Release treatment this week. The original demonstration posted here was too much product. The spray formula requires less, and no blow dry or flat ironing is need for curl elongation with natural wash n' go looks. A deep conditioning with the Texture Release spray is all that is needed unless the client plans to wear the hair straight. They did not have updated instructions printed out, but I am willing to try the treatment again.

    1. My stylist sprayed in too much product, blew it dry (which made it rock hard), sat me under the streamer for 15 minutes, THEN the dryer for 15 mintues, THEN flat ironed the product into my hair. It was so hard that she washed my hair, then blew it dry again! Now, my hair is straighter than a board and thin when wet. No wash and go for me. I'm forced to straighten my hair or look like a wet mop. I'm so sad!!

    2. I am so sorry Britney. Depending on the hair type and porosity, I really think the results vary with this smoothing process. The product itself is just not user friendly. Your stylist was probably frustrated too.

    3. Just reading this blog.

By reading the description you gave it was done incorrectly. The products should not be flat ironed into your hair. It has to be rinsed out first.

  16. Hi I had this applied to my natural silky curly hair at a salon and was told it would revert back to my normal texture. It was only been a month but my hair.. especially edges.. are now hard. I'm afraid the product has altered my normal texture. Is there a way to remove it? So afraid I will have to cut it out to get my wash n go curly hair back. Help

    1. Deat ATL girl: Consider Pureology or Colorproof Volume shampoos to clarify the product off of the hair. If you have permanent heat trained hair, then your "silky curly" hair may not have been a good candidate for this royal jelly based smoothing treatment.

  17. Hi Love your blog on this! It's funny I'm about to decide on the Basic Smoothing treatment or the Avlon Texture Release-it seems like Basic is the way to go! Is that still your fav? or have you found another?

  19. wish i had found this b4 using Texture Release, it has ruined my hair to thin, bone straight & limp. The product is trash! It is not temporary, 1'm at a year after app, no reversion.

    1. Results can vary based on hair texture. Some people may not want reversion. Thanks for sharing.
