The Soft Curl Look: Wave by Design

Another "very, Very, very" happy customer who had been accustomed to the Wave Nouveau system, but she was willing to try the Wave by Design System with me.  She loved it!  I did a few things different from my "body wave" client that I highlighted on my blog from a few months back.

1) I used the Design Essentials Restore to pre-protect her hair prior to performing the re-arranger step.
2) I used the "gray" perm rods.
3) I used a neutralizing bib in addition to cotton around the hairline to apply the neutralizing solution while she sat upright the entire time.
4) I re-used the neutralizing run-off from the neutralizing bib to reapply to the hair after removing the rods.  Then rinsing again.
5) I used a semi-permanent black haircolor for about 15 to 20 minutes at room temperature at the very end of the service.

I only trimmed about a good half inch off in order to keep her in a short style.

I have noticed that some people are inquiring if "phase 2" be skipped during the soft curl process assuming that they want the "straight hair" look versus "curly hair."  So my suggestion for those people who want the straight look, do NOT skip phase 2 of the wave nouveau or wave by design systems, but instead, use super size perm rods in lieu of the smaller perm rods.  Please see my separate blog article on "super size" perm rods.  The jumbo perm rods will give you a brazilian wave which is going to enhance the body in the hair, but still leave you with an overall "straight" look.  Skipping the phase 2 step entirely will probably leave your hair looking "stick straight." I highly doubt if anyone will be excited about that.

Surprisingly, with this client, I do not think that I would do anything different in the future except purchase an end paper dispenser tool to speed up the rodding time.

Her final maintenance was heavy moisturizing with the "Mist and Shine" spray, then Lotion sections at a time as I scrunch the hair with my hands.  Styling was simple!

  1. I have discovered with some curl patterns, I can skip Step 1 which is the rearranger. I just allow the booster wrap lotion to process longer. The roots will be more texturized versus relaxed, but it will helps with keeping the thickness to the hair. I also recommend protein treatments a few weeks before the soft curl body wave chemical procedure.

    1. Hey lady, I just wanted to speak on the Wave Noveau. I tried a thing with the Wave Noveau and I never seen any videos on anyone doing this process.....call me a dare devil. Your post is the first one I have seen. How is your hair doing now.???? I researched the brand and I did an experiment on a test piece of my hair. I concluded this: why does one have to use the step 1 to get your hair straight and then totally redefine and make new curls when you can enhance the curls your already have. So I did just that. I used my natural hair and I just skipped step 1 and just went straight to step 2 on my natural hair. I put it on my hair and did two strand twist then I proceeded with step 3 the neutralizer. Worst case scenario “I always wanted to shave my head” lol. I figured what is the worst thing that could happen, you are literally reducing 2 chemical processes to just 1. I did this process on Sunday 13 Dec 20 and it has been 11 days. My curl definition looks amazing and so far no hair shedding. My hair is not wavy like people who do the whole process. It doesn’t look like a Jheri curl either. Also my hair does not look or feel like hair after a texturizer ( I tried that back in 2009 and hated it. Hair would tangle and strands would be a lot of different textures. I had lots of breakage) My curls are literally softer, looser, still thick, with way less maintenance. Washing my hair is amazing and a quick process. I will have to give it about 3 months to really see how it’s doing, but so far no complaints. Just a disclaimer, I’m not saying for anyone to do this, I just wanted to experiment and was curious. I did buy all the tools and supplies to apply it to my hair safely, but I did do it myself. I was natural for 7 years and I wanted to try something new. I don’t know how I came up with this or even struck up the nerve to actually do it, but the deed is done.

    2. Hi, any updates on how the curls look so far? I’ve noticed a common things with most of the Gina curl/wave processes is that the curls start to lose definition a bit, does it still look/feel how it did when you first did it?

    1. Is the Wave by Design system able to be done on longer natural hair? I have 4c hair that's about shoulder length and am interested in chemical straightening with the curly look. I'm located in Greensboro!

    2. Wave Nouveau system has a "resistant" formula for their rearranger. Wave by Design system only has one strength. Hope this info helos you in your decision making.

    4. Hello! I have 4c hair. I just tried the wave nouveau as well and I really don't care for how straight my natural hair got. I just wanted what you described to soften my natural pattern...not totally change the pattern. I really don't want to fully straighten my hair during the touch up next time. Are you a stylist? If so, where are you located? Would you mind calling me I have a few more questions 513-642-9951

  3. I severely damaged my hair with bleach. It was cut into a bob. This was in August. I have been taking care of it. Protein Treatment, oils, conditioner and it still bone straight. Do you think I can do the wave nouveau and skip the relaxer phase. Do you think it can do more damage or will it work being that my hair has no curl pattern, please advise. Thank you!

    1. Body waves and relaxers are not compatible. So do not try wave nouveau on relaxed hair.

  4. I severely damaged my hair with bleach, lost all my curls. I cut it really short into a bob. This was in August 2020. I have been taking care of it. Protein treatmens, hot oil, deep conditioner, moisterizers. It's growing but no curl pattern. My question is can 8 do the wave nouveau and skip the phase one. Being that the hair is already relaxed? Will all my hair fall out, or break? Please advise. Thank you!
