Product Review: Salon Exclusive relaxer brand

It has been at least a year since I have used a "Salon Exclusive" brand relaxer. This relaxer brand seems to leave the hair silky, straight; however, I and a few other stylists felt that the straightness maybe leaving the hair too vulnerable making it easy to break.

I mentioned my concerns to the distributor whom I was buying the product from and his response was "if you like it, then buy it; if you do not like it, then don't buy it." It was at that point that I discontinued use. I finally realized that manufacturers and distributors are there to meet sales quota. Until their sales drop, some have no intention of improving the product.

This company is very aggressive in adding new products to their line to profit from the latest trends such as the Argan oil demand. I believe this brand is also sold as the "Action South" relaxer line in other parts of the region.

The brand name "Salon Exclusive" is hard to research because many different relaxer lines consider themselves "salon exclusive" meaning salon professional use only. So to have a brand name of "Salon Exclusive" can be a little confusing even if making a phone inquiry to someone who is not aware of the actual brand existence.

I only recommend this relaxer system for those who want to maintain a short haircut or who promises to only roller set their hair. Blow-dry styling may be too much stress on really straight hair. It may be safer to use mild strength in this relaxer line and let it sit for a few extra minutes.

Those with sensitive scalps will be sensitive to the regular strength lye version. However, their no-lye version is very tolerable. As with all chemicals, choose with caution.

  1. Thank you so much for posting your review on Salon Exclusive relaxer brand. I have been trying to find information on this relaxer ever since my hairstylist recommended it. Its been hard to find information because of the name as you mentioned. My hairstylist recommended it because of the silky hair results, but I'm more concerned with healthy hair than bone straight. She has used it in my hair 3 times now and I've been noticing breakage. Short pieces coming off in my hands when I finger comb or just comb through my hair. The pieces are about 1/2" long. I've mentioned it to her, but she says its what I'm doing at home. I've really been trying to treat my hair in a more healthy way by deep conditioning, doing egg treatments, and also doing coconut oil hot oil treatments. I've also been doing more air drying and limiting my use of the curling iron. Prior to this I used Mizani for about 10 yrs. I switched to Affirm sometime last year based on her recommendation, but I thought it was too strong and my hair was too straight. After mentioning this she recommended using Salon Exclusive, but so far I'm a bit concerned. I've thought about transitioning to my natural hair, but I am not sure if I can manage it. Any advice you can offer will be so appreciated.

    Thanks,
    jaislandbella.

  2. Hi jaislandbella: The best advice that I can give is to roller set and to try curly styles shape/trim as needed. If Mizani was working for you, then go back to what was working. I do not recommend "no lye" relaxers. So a Medium Mizani relaxer should be a good fit unless you have color in your hair. If you have color treated hair, stick with Mild Mizani (lye version). I am not fond of the Butter Blend, but the traditional Mizani relaxers have been around for awhile. I trust them more. I hope that this helps.

  3. I have been using the Salon Exclusives Sensitive scalp relaxer for the last 4 years and my hair went from a short Halle Berry cut, to a mid length style that almost touches my bra strap. My hair has never been this long in my life, unless it was a weave. I love Salon Exclusives and refuse to have any other relaxer in my hair.

    1. Thank you Ashuria for your feedback and testimony. I am curious as to how often you relax your hair and which curl pattern is your hair (Type 3 or Type 4?). This information will assist others in determining whether this line will work for them as well. Relaxers deliver different results depending on the curl patterns that the client is starting with. I look forward to your posting the additional information about your natural hair pattern. Thanks again for writing!

  4. My stylist has been using this Opulence Regular for a while. I have moved and where I am the stylist does not use this. Last time I had a perm was in December. She is telling me to wait for 3 more months before I switch but my edges need to be relaxed (I am wearing a sew in). Can you suggest a perm that is either comparable that will not over process or be a different chemical in my hair? What other options do I have at this point?

    Thanks

  7. The Organic Root Stimulator brand has been around for decades. The "girls" version is no lye. You mix it up. It is designed for children, but it still works.
