Hot Rollers Review: Helen of Troy versus Babyliss Pro

I had two clients that I warmed up "hot rollers" to service over the last few weeks.  One needed a formal updo, but she was short on time.  The other wanted to re-curl her wig.  As much as I really liked the carrying case for the Babyliss Pro hot rollers, they did NOT pack much heat. They underperformed with both clients.

The Helen of Troy rollers are metal, and you almost need a "finger protector" to sustain the heat of the rollers.  They curl the hair like a "hot iron."  I was too scared to use the Helen of Troy hot rollers  on the synthetic blend wig.  Hands down, the Helen of Troy hot rollers outperformed the Babyliss Pro hot rollers.

Both rollers are smooth.  The Babyliss Pro roller is more hollow, but I believe the plastic does not sustain the heat.  Ideally, I think the Helen of Troy metal hot rollers are overkill, and the Babyliss Pro rollers are underachievers.  I would love a hot roller set that fall in the middle of these two options.  Until then, I will stick with the Helen of Troy as my first choice.

  1. Happy New Year to you and I pray God will continue to bless you in your business. I continue to learn so much useful information from your blog. Thank God for you. Ok, as a type 4 natural, would you suggest these Helen of Troy rollers for curling my hair after a blow dry or flat iron to give some good curls to hold without having to use an iron? And if so, are these jumbo curls like 1 inch? I also tried to goodle where I can find these and all I get are used ones on ebay. Yuck. Any idea where I can buy them? Thanks a million, Rose

    1. Thanks so much!!!!! Happy New Year as well! And yes, these Helen of Troy rollers were effective almost as soon as you place them in. So you don't have to wait for them to cool all the way down, but you can pincurl the after the (early) roller removal. Others have mentioned Caruso hot rollers. I have had the Helen of Troy hot rollers for some years now. Sally's Beauty Supply usually carries that brand. I will have to look into suppliers. Also, the largest sizes look to be at the size of the purple magnetic rollers. I will keep you posted on supplier updates. Thanks for being a long time follower!

    1. Thanks for your patience Rose, and I am grateful for your continued support. You will be happy to know the Helen of Troy metal hot rollers can be purchased at www.parisbeautysupplies.com for a sales price of $29.99. Search for Professional 14 piece hairsetter to find them on the website. Enjoy!

    2. Hi Benita,

Just letting you know that after ordering these rollers last Saturday they are out of stock. Well...what to do. Any alternate with comparable results or can you recommend a curling iron that really smooths out and gives a nice curl to natural type 4 hair? I need your stamp of approval! Lol, thanks Rose

    3. Hi Rose: I use the Hot Tools electric curling iron. The temperature goes to 450 degrees. You should such my blog for electric curling irons for pictures. I have the ones with Marcel closures. I will check to see if I can find the hot rollers on another site, but I assume everyone may be out. I will post again if I get a hot roller brand recommendation.
