Product Review: Goldwell Elumen Hair color

Goldwell Elumen Hair color has been on my wish list for awhile.  It is a sem-permanent color.  There is no mixing with developer.  Just a direct dye.  I like it.  It seems to absorb better in the hair than the Sebastian Cellophanes.

There is some sodium hydroxide toward the end of the ingredient list.  So if you or a client has a soft curl or thio based chemical, then I would not recommend the Elumen color because it may not be compatible.

I used this color on a client with relaxed hair to cover her gray in between relaxers, and it covered gray decently considering the last relaxer touch-up was a few weeks prior.

The consistency of the Elumen seems wet enough to cocktail with conditioner if a quick fix is ever needed.  So far, I have only tried the NA@2 color which is a natural black color, but I plan to add a few more color options at the salon.

  1. Elumen is gorgeous on relaxed or thio hair because it's very acidic and neutralise the alcaline residu from the relaxer ! Hair fiber will drink the color so half time is needed. It's a great way to bring the shine back. If used the same day after the relaxer, make sure hair is back to neutral to acid ph and no oil residu left on ! ( pour white vinegar ! )

    1. Thanks Roderick for your feedback! I will have to look into the white vinegar benefits over the apple cider vinegar. Thanks for the same day relaxer safety tip!

    1. I offer it in Metro Charlotte, NC. I do not think there is a salon locator for this product. Ask your regular hairstylist to look into it or to contact me.

  4. Please see my other articles on this blog regarding Goldwell Elumen. I am not sure of the pH of this color. Because of the sodium hydroxide, I am thinking it is closer to a neutral to alkaline pH. Also, I have learned it is a solvent based haircolor. I have slowed down my use of it because if it gets on the scalp, it's a little hard to remove.

    1. I would recommend an elumen color class before you dive in to this awesome color line. There are some important guidelines. Especially for changing color after.

    2. I agree with you Sandra. I have seen some awesome purple and green hair that does not fade from using the Elumen. That's good and scary all at the same time.
